Do Not Allow Obama To Serve a 3rd Term-Stop Resolution 5 From Being Passed

Some information has just been brought to my attention regarding a piece of congressional legislation. The House of Representatives has proposed a resolution called House Joint Resolution 5 that would repeal the 22nd Amendment which limits the President to two terms. This would allow President Obama to run for a third term. I don't think any President, neither Good nor Bad should be allowed to serve more than two terms. I believe that if this amendment is passed it would open the door to a wide variety of abuses by both our President and our government. The passing of this bill could open the door to even more government control. This could even open the door for the United States to no longer be a democratic country. The U.S could be ruled by a dictatorship instead of having free and open elections.

Rep. Jose Serrano of NYC is the person who introduced this House Joint Resolution 5. Here is his contact information in order to petition him to stop this resolution from moving forward.

PLEASE HELP STOP HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 5 FROM BEING PASSED!!!!!

The 22nd Amendment is antidemocratic. Term limits deny the nation the opportunity to re-elect successful presidents. If Americans are pleased with the performance of their chief executive, why force him out because of a fear of power? Our checks and balances system is strong enough to resist over-weening ambition.

The 22nd Amendment robs us of the most experienced people for the office. Why not let the American people decide if they want to take advantage of that service instead of risking the job on an untried leader?

The Amendment also reduces the political power of the president to unacceptable levels.

The day after a president wins a second term, everyone knows he is an instant lame duck. At the moment of his highest experience and level of authority, the president's ability to shape the policy agenda is diminished because everyone knows when he is leaving office. Attention quickly shifts to speculation about a successor, and soon he can do little more than focus on foreign policy. Pressing domestic tasks end up waiting until after the next election.

One purpose of elections is to reward or punish leaders for their performance. Since second-term presidents will not face the electorate again, they have an incentive to use their discretionary authority without fear of retribution. In other words, they are less accountable to the public.

Our Founding Fathers ... considered ... debated ... and then ... rejected ... term Limits ... for our Presidents.

Actually George Washington is the person who established the tradition that a president would only seek two terms in office. It was only in 1940 that Franklin Delano Roossevelt broke that precedent due to The Great Depression and World War II. In 1951 the 22nd Amendment was ratified.

Although chilling in its content, keep in mind something. No amendment to the US Constitution can be passed by Congressional fiat. It must be ratified my 75% of the States, something that I find unlikely. And to call a Constitutional convention would allow multiple other considerations to be considered. I'm thinking of The Bill of Federalism proposal. You can read about it at http://www.federalismamendment.com.

EHVogel,
Thank You very much for the link. Yes, It must be ratified by 75% of the states within a 7 year period. It is a chilling thought when you think of all the government takeovers of car companies and banks. Plus, the Democrats have a majority in Congress. But, yes I agree that there are many hurdles to overcome in order to make this Resolution a reality.
