The "Breast Milk Baby" Doll: An Example of Sexualization of Girls Or Appropriate?

The "Breast Milk Baby" is a doll meant to encourage little girls to learn about breastfeeding babies.  Why do young girls need to learn about breastfeeding babies?  The only way a woman would need to learn about breastfeeding is if she were pregnant.  So, is the "Breast Milk Baby" doll encouraging little girls to become familiar with all things sexual?  Some people may think that this doll is cute but in my opinion this doll has crossed the line and oversexualizes young girls. ABC asks (sorry but the video is not able to be embedded) Does Doll for Little Girls Go Too Far?

  1. My first thought: the little girl in the picture running to her mom, crying. Mom asks, 'Honey, what's wrong?'

Little girl: 'By baby's gonna starve, mommy, because I don't have breasts to give her milk!'

    Ah, let the psychoanalysis begin...

  2. No 'By' .. 'My' (I gave the kid a code in de node, I guess).

  3. I don't have an issue with this. Breast feeding is still kind of taboo in this country. It is the most natural thing in the world. A girl wanting to play with this doll is more than likley too young to equate babies and sex.

  5. Why can't kids be kids? They grow up fast enough.

  6. I think the doll is unnecessary. As long as children understand that babies drink milk from momma's chest, or from momma dog's tummy, that's all they need to know. They don't need to practice the motions as children in order to breastfeed as adults. In fact, there are a number of adult things that kids don't need to practice as kids. I would skip the doll if I had a little girl.

  7. This is just so wrong. The Watcher's comment is spot on.

  8. If the little girl comes up with it on her own to breast feed the doll I'm ok with it. But to have a top where a little girl puts on her flower boobs is just wrong.

  10. While I find the toy, and concept a bit weird, breast feeding is by no means sexual.

How many kids with a younger sibling already know what breast feeding is?

  11. This is absolutely disgusting in every aspect of the word. Children should be allowed to be children. Let them keep their innocence. Too soon, they will lose what is so precious.

What happened to plain old dolls that don't do anything and let the kids have imagination?

  13. This is very disturbing and ridiculous and another way for this company to make money, that is the bottom line.

  14. I'm with Matt and Adrienne: it's weird but not a sexualization.

It's not necessary for teaching the concept, but it's probably not harmful either.

I must admit, it would be nicer as a nursing mom, if more of the kids that surrounded me in public were used to the concept, and didn't stare slackjawed and ask embarrassing questions when the blanket falls off your shoulder for a blink.

    LOL

  17. Matt, Adrienne, nooneofanyimport, and Just A Conservative Girl:

I classify this as sexualization of young girls since breast feeding is only called for after sex occurs. Sex occurs and then pregnancy. The only way a woman would need to use the method of breastfeeding would be after getting pregnant and this is why I believe this is the sexualization of young girls.
